"What a gem you and the ARTROOM are, and how lucky Litchfield County is to have you. I have lived all over the country and what you are bringing to Bantam is AMAZING!!"
-Mother of a 2 year old
"Our son has dabbled in a few activities, but never really enjoyed anything enough to stick with it. His enthusiasm for ARTROOM is unparalleled."
-Mother of a 6 year old
"The moment when synchronicity steps in are the 'wow' times which reinforce and inspire our belief that allowing creativity is essential for the human brain. The way children think when they are given the space to do so, and when we take the time to listen, is amazing."
-Early Childhood specialist
Teaching artists and ARTROOM founder Jessica Jane Russell is a former Montessori Mom, and an artist trained in architecture. She was raised in Larchmont, New York, attended Brown University until her family moved back to Sydney, Australia, her birthplace, where she spent the remainder of her undergraduate years. She returned to the US with degrees in Fine Art and English, and spent few years teaching art at the New Orleans Children’s Museum. She later did a Masters in Architecture at Yale.
Over a decade ago, with her first born approaching two, she founded her own studio space beside a the Bantam River in the old brick Bantam Switch Factory. She fell in love with the old building and the borough of Bantam, Litchfield’s growing center of innovative small businesses.
Jessica soon recognized a need among young families for more creative time and space for their children. This was the beginning of ARTROOM Atelier, an incubator space for childhood creativity.
All ARTROOM teachers work with children in the same open, positive, non-judgmental modality Jessica has developed with inspiration from Reggio Emilia and Maria Montessori, bringing their own experience and style to classes, while remaining child-centered.
