At ARTROOM we provide a safe space space for practicing the courageousness, concentration, experimentation, sensory stimulation, and independent thinking that your child craves and needs.
We don’t know what the the future looks like, and one could say that parenting is a process of getting comfortable with that not knowing. We do our best prepare our children, and then learn to let go as they follow their own path. What is certain is that our children’s adult lives will require increased adaptability and creativity as they find this path in a rapidly changing economy.
Contrary to some understandings, creativity is not a gift given to a certain few. Creative thinking can be cultivated, must be practiced, and can be applied to all areas of our lives.

AFTERSCHOOL SESSION III
Feb 24, 2019 - Mar 31, 2019 (6 weeks)
Ready, Set, Draw: ages 10 - 13
In this class we will be drawing, painting, and drawing some more, accessing creative flow through drawing games, painting play, and observation-based work. Classes will include short mindfulness practices, drawing and painting warm ups, and process-art projects. This is for the child who loves to draw!
Creative Kid Lit: ages 4 - 7
Using children's stories as a springboard for creative thinking, class begins with a story related to a process-art project. All projects are open-ended invitations aimed at promoting an attitude of self-acceptance, courageous exploration, and bold experimentation. This class fills up quickly! Be sure to register below.
WEDNESDAYS 3:45 - 5: ages 6 - 9
Band Together! Around the World in Art & Music
Exploring the intersection of visual art & music throughout world cultures, we will make instruments from the four families of an orchestra: woodwind, strings, brass, and percussion. Looking closely at the cultures from which these art forms originate, we will then make DIY versions of these instruments. Plus special musical guests!
THURSDAYS 11 -12 ages 3-6, & 3:45 - 5 ages 6 - 9
Kait Clark, seasoned art teacher and founder of Integrative Healing Arts, joins us at ARTROOM to lead children through imaginative explorations in a variety of media and techniques, inspired by stories of world renowned artists.
Introductions will be made to a new artist every week through stories and process art. Materials and techniques will include paint, pastels, clay, collage, sculpture, and more! At the end of each session, children will bring home work inspired by that week's artist.
FRIDAYS 3:30 - 4:30 (with open studio 2:30 - 3:30)
Teen Studio ages 12 -16
Tweens and Teens gather every Friday for 1-2 hours of drawing and painting with guest artist Sarah Zahran. This relaxed, yet in-depth class opens at 2:30 for students who wish to come hang out or work on a personal project. A 1 hour guided session starts at 3:30.
This class is ideal for anyone getting serious about making art, ready to make portfolio-ready artwork, or just needing more time and support for their budding creative abilities.

"What a gem you and the ARTROOM are, and how lucky Litchfield County is to have you. I have lived all over the country and what you are bringing to Bantam is AMAZING!!"
-Mother of a 2 year old
"Our son has dabbled in a few activities, but never really enjoyed anything enough to stick with it. His enthusiasm for ARTROOM is unparalleled."
-Mother of a 6 year old
"The moment when synchronicity steps in are the 'wow' times which reinforce and inspire our belief that allowing creativity is essential for the human brain. The way children think when they are given the space to do so, and when we take the time to listen, is amazing."
-Early Childhood specialist in response to an ARTROOM instagram post
Teaching artists and ARTROOM founder Jessica Jane Russell is a former Montessori Mom, and an artist trained in architecture. She was raised in Larchmont, New York, attended Brown University until her family moved back to Sydney, Australia, her birthplace, where she spent the remainder of her undergraduate years. She returned to the US with degrees in Fine Art and English, and spent few years teaching art at the New Orleans Children’s Museum. She later did a Masters in Architecture at Yale.
Over a decade ago, with her first born approaching two, she founded a studio space beside the Bantam River in the old brick Bantam Switch Factory. She fell in love with the old building and the borough of Bantam, Litchfield’s growing center of innovative small businesses.
Jessica soon recognized a need among young families for more creative time and space for their children. This was the beginning of ARTROOM Atelier, an incubator space for childhood creativity.
All ARTROOM teachers work with children in the same open, positive, non-judgmental philosophy developed in Montessori and Reggio Emilia schools, bringing their own experience and style to classes, while ALWAYS remaining in service of the greatest gifts your children bring to the world: their unique creative expression.
In the ARTROOM our process-based art projects provide a safe space space for practicing deep concentration, messy experimentation, sensory stimulation, courageous decision making, and independent thinking.
